Barbara Kataoka has a Stanford career spanning more than twenty years. Her vast experience in the school of Humanities & Sciences at Stanford includes the Department of Asian Languages and Program in the History of Science.  For the past sixteen years, she has been the Administrative Services Manager for Communication.  She manages a rapidly growing Social Science Research department involved in cutting-edge research: Human Computer Interaction, Virtual Reality, Political Communication, and New Media.

She also manages the master's program in Journalism. She was a past recipient of the Dean's Staff Award for 2001 in recognition of her exemplary service to the University.

Kataoka travels extensively in Asia and Europe. She just returned from Japan for the global launch of her daughter Drue's latest project Around the World in a Single Stroke.

She has many other Stanford connections.  Her daughter Drue, a member of Stanford's Class of 2000, is a Master Sumi-e Artist. Drue's 28 commemorative prints are archived in Stanford University's Department of Special Collections. While at Stanford, Drue was commissioned to create a number of sports paintings for the Department of Athletics.  Her original paintings also include numerous  jazz paintings of stars such as Wynton Marsalis as well as other musicians, dance paintings of tango, swing, flamenco and ballet, and paintings of Stanford campus landmarks.  To see her paintings or portrait commissions, you can visit her website www.drue.net. Drue's latest project, Around the World in a Single Stroke, honors 12 extraordinary individuals: Stanford President Emeritus Gerhard Casper, Bill Walsh, Wynton Marsalis, Catherine Malandrino, Charlie Trotter, Odile Gilbert, Bernard Nicod, Tokizo Nakamura, Jim Clendenen, Steven Spurrier, and Craig Newmark.
