Constitution Day

The Constitution of the United States was signed on September 17, 1787.  As part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005, the United States Congress set forth a requirement that all educational institutions receiving federal funding must provide educational resources pertaining to the United States Constitution on September 17 of each year. 

For Constitution Day 2012, Stanford University is complying with the requirement by publishing this web page.  Our hope is that students and other members of the Stanford community will follow the links provided on this page to access informational resources that will allow them to learn more about the U.S. Constitution.

• Stanford Constitutional Law Center – The Center, founded in 2006 as part of the Stanford Law School, provides a forum for Constitutional scholarship by Stanford faculty and for debates by Stanford community members about Constitutional issues.  You may be particularly interested in the Center’s Video Playlist.

• American Memory (Library of Congress] – The American Memory project includes this page titled “A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation: U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates 1774-1875.”  Here you can access a wide variety of primary source documents relating to the creation and impact of the Constitution.

• Full Text of the Constitution (National Archives) – A complete transcription of the original text of the Constitution, with hyperlinks identifying sections of the text that have been changed or removed through the Amendment process.

• Constitutional Q & A (National Archives) – Commonly-asked questions about the Constitutional Convention, specific provisions of the Constitution, the amendment process, and other Constitutional topics.

• National Constitution Center – An independent, non-profit organization with a mission to educate the public about the history of the Constitution as well as its importance in present-day American society.  The organization has a museum in Philadelphia, located near the Liberty Bell.
