UNDERGRAD DINNER
The first undergrad dinner of the quarter takes place this Sunday, April
6th at 5:45PM on the 3rd floor of Old Union. Drop by after mass for some
delicious food and good company. See you there!
RICE BOWL DROP-OFF
This Sunday will be the last time we will collect rice bowl contributions
after Mass. Look for the box labeled "Rice Bowl Drop-off" by the rear
exit. If you do not bring your contributions on Sunday, please drop them
off ASAP at the Interns' office. Contact Andrew (abarba@stanford.edu) for
more information.
FR. NATHAN'S DISCUSSION SERIES
Join Fr. Nathan as he continues his discussion series from winter quarter
Wednesdays from 7-9:30pm, all in the Seminar Room on the 3rd Floor of Old
Union. The first will be on April 9, entitled "Forgiveness Lessons." If
forgiving was easy and commonplace, the world would be peaceful...but it
isn't. The ability to forgive is an important life skill that we aren't
necessarily taught in a thoughtful way. Join Fr. Nathan for an evening on
Forgiveness. For more information or with questions, contact Estella
(cestella@stanford.edu).
UG RETREAT @ BERKELEY
Our undergraduate Catholic friends at Berkeley have invited us to their
overnight retreat. We'll head to the East Bay on Friday, April 11 at 5 PM
and be back by noon Saturday. There is no cost and it should be a lot of
fun. Contact Andrew (abarba@stanford.edu) if interested.
SAVE THE DATE: PERFORMER MIKE MANGIONE
Join us on Thursday April 17th at 8pm at the Axe and Palm for a night of
music and fun! We'll be hosting Singer Mike Mangione, whose music is
inspired by Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body. Check out Mike and
his music at www.myspace.com/mikemangione. Contact the Interns
(cestella@stanford.edu) for more info.
CROSSROADS CATHOLIC FELLOWSHIP
We kick off fellowship this quarter on Tuesday, April 8th, at 8PM on the
third floor of Old Union. We'll look at religious texts that examine our
apostolic calling as Christians. CrossRoads aims to assist students in
realizing the Christian ideal put forward in the Gospels: to love God with
all one's heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love one's neighbor as
oneself. For more information, contact Chris Hammen
(chammen@stanford.edu).
POPE BIRTHDAY PROJECT
The National Catholic Educational Association has launched a project to
honor the Pope on his birthday, April 16 as well as his U.S. visit on
April 15-20, which will focus on education. The NCEA is inviting college
students to participate in "Birthday Blessings for Pope Benedict XVI: A
gift of public service from U.S. Catholic youth and students," a campaign
seeking service hours in honor of the Holy Father's birthday. Students in
schools, religious education programs, colleges and seminaries from all
over the U.S. are being asked to complete or pledge (for completion by May
31, 2008) community service time in the name of the Pope. Activities could
include efforts in which students are already involved, those that reflect
the mission of the church to serve others, simply any kind of service that
helps others. You can pledge individually at http://ncea.catholic.org or
send an e-mail to the Interns (cestella@stanford.edu) for more information
and a pledge form to be included in the parish-wide pledge form. Contact
the Interns or visit http://ncea.catholic.org for more
information.
CELEBRATE LIFE CONFERENCE @ STANFORD
The seventh annual Celebrate Life Conference, entitled Empowering Pro-Life
Student Groups, will be held at Stanford University on Saturday, April 19,
2008. The purpose of the Celebrate Life Conference is to create dialogue
among students and community members, as well as to celebrate the splendor
of every stage of human life. Speakers will discuss several topics from
practical matters (recruiting members and fundraising) to more substantive
issues (effective debate tactics with pro-choice students and working to
find common ground). It is our hope that conference attendees come away
with a greater understanding of the support system offered by California
Students for Life. You can visit the California Students for Life website
for more information regarding the CLC or you can visit the Stanford
Students for Life CLC 2008 Registration page directly to
register. Contact Mary Ho (maryho@stanford.edu) for more details.
BEATITUDE MASS APRIL 19
Henry Mollicone's Beatitude Mass will be performed in the Santa Clara
Mission Church at 8PM, Saturday, April 19. The performance will feature
members of several local choruses and choreography by Kristin
Kusanovich. Suggested donation is $25, with all proceeds going to homeless
advocacy organizations.
MELINDA HENNEBERGER TALK APRIL 16
Join us Wednesday, April 16 at 7:30PM in the Common Room on the third
floor of the Old Union for a talk by Melinda Henneberger, Commonweal
columnist, Newsweek contributing editor, and author of If They Only
Listened to Us: What Women Voters Want Politicians to Hear.
Henneberger's talk is entitled "Five Truths About Women Voters
in '08 (And Why They're Flat-Out False)" and is co-sponsored by CCAS and
the Office for Religious Life. For more information, contact Catherine
Wolff (cwolff@stanford.edu).
WHITE MASS APRIL 14
CCAS will sponsor its first White Mass at 5PM on Monday, April 14, in the
Memorial Church, with a reception to follow. The White Mass, presided over
by the bishop, honors community members who work in the health care
professions. Please join us as we celebrate their service.
COMMUNITY PRAYERS
Please pray for Claire Fitzgerald who is recovering from a serious
infection; please keep up the prayers for Gillonne Wachter and Sheila
Peterson who are seriously ill.
FAITH IN ACTION
The Church works in both Sacramento and Washington to
bring Catholic values to proposed legislation. You can become
better informed and help affect the process at key times by
signing up to receive electronic news letters and action alerts.
Sign up for the national list with the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops or the California Catholic
Conference (the policy arm
of the California dioceses). We can make a difference!
MARTYR OF THE AMAZON:
THE LIFE OF SR. DOROTHY STANG
Author and Biographer Sr. Roseanne Murphy of Notre Dame
de Namur University in Belmont, will be speaking about the
inspiring life and work of Sr. Dorothy Stang on Sunday, April
27th at 7:00pm at St. Athanasius Parish, 160 N. Rengstorff Ave.,
Mountain View. For 31 years, Sister Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN,
was a missionary, living with and working for the poor in
the Amazon Forest of Brazil. Because of her work for justice
and for the preservation of the Amazon Forest, on February
12, 2005, she was assassinated on a lonely country road in
the small village of Boa Esparanca in Para, Brazil. This event
is sponsored by the St. Athanasius Justice and Peace Group.
There is no charge but donations for the continuing work of
the Sisters of Notre Dame in Brazil would be appreciated. For
more information call Mike Cavera (650/967-7939).
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
Next Sunday, April 13, is a special Easter celebration of Good
Shepherd Sunday. In 1963 Pope Paul VI designated this day
as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Our parish will join with
the universal church to ask for God's blessings that we may
be strengthened in our Christian vocation.
PRAYER PARTNERS
When good or bad news happens, the rest of the community would really like
to share your joy or support you in difficult times. We would like to
start putting in the bulletin the names of those who would like us to pray
for them and for their families, for whatever reason. Simply e-mail
Chaplain Nancy Greenfield (nanccas@aol.com) with your information by
Wednesday mornings, and she will make sure it gets in the bulletin the
following Sunday. Let's journey together!
