About Stanford Cycling
Stanford Cycling is the umbrella organization for the University's Road and Track Racing Team,
Mountain Bike Racing Team, recreational rides, and cycling-oriented community service efforts.
Our members come from all parts of Stanford: we are PhD candidates, lawyers,
businesspeople, as well as undergraduates.
All levels and types of riders are welcome to join.
Even if you don't want to race, benefits of club membership include group rides,
Stanford Cycling clothing, coaching, and access to club events. The club
facilitates rider development for all levels of cyclists.
Collegiate Racing
Stanford Cycling has one of the best collegiate racing programs in the country,
with top results in road, track, and mountain biking. The last decade alone has
seen Stanford win
three national championships, while producing three Olympian alumni and 18 All-Americans.
Racing takes
place nearly year round, in three different seasons, road
in the spring, track in the summer and
mountain biking in the fall. Stanford races in the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference of
the National
Collegiate Cycling Association, the collegiate arm of USA Cycling.
Team success is based on a points system. For each race during the season,
riders compete in categories (A-C for men, A-B for women). Results are weighted
according to category and added up across races. Thus, riders of all ability
levels can contribute to the overall success of the team.
The Club in the Community
Stanford Cycling actively involves itself in the surrounding community.
The team collaborates with the city of Palo Alto, helping conduct basic
bicycle safety training sessions at local elementary schools. Stanford Cyclists
teach children how to safely move to their left when riding in a street, signal
their turns, avoid obstacles in the road, and properly adjust and wear a helmet.
Stanford cyclists also work to keep the trails we ride open and free of user conflicts.
The team promotes conscientious trail use through the example we set
on our regular group rides and by teaching our new members the rules of the trail.
An IMBA member, the team also promotes and encourages participation in trail
maintenance opportunities in the area.
Stanford regularly hosts two race weekends, one for mountain bikes in the fall
and one for road
bikes in the Spring. These popular annual events attract collegiate racers from around the state, while
the mountain bike race is also popular with local non-collegiate riders.
Be sure to check back for the latest information about these events here and
on the WCCC
site.
