Problems Sending Email
I tried to send someone an email but got "You have not set your email address in 'Preferences'" dialogue box; what's going on?
In order to allow the recipient to reply to your message, most browsers force
users to provide a return email address. For Netscape, go to the Options
menu and select Preferences.../Mail and News. Provide your email address
and try again. (Some browers will automatically prompt you for your email
address. Once you do, they will then allow you to email.)
Netscape is looking for (application)? What's going on?
Netscape requires other applications to help out with the display of
video, playback of audio, etc. (See What are/How
do I find the 'Helper Applications'?) Typically, you "point" your
brower to these applications once and then the browser remembers where
they are each time they are needed.
Due to the public nature of the Computer Lab, the browsers may or may not
be pointing at the needed applications. The GSB does not officially
support these applications, but they can be found in the Not Supported
folder on the Macintosh_Software drive:
- Sparkle plays back mpeg/QuickTime movies.
- JPEG allows you to view still images.
- SoundMachine plays back audio files in a variety of formats.
To use these applications under Netscape, go to the
Preferences... item of the Options menu. Select "Helper Applications".
Here you select which file format you're trying to "play", and
then you click on "Browse" to show Netscape where the application
lives. In this case, you would click "Browse" and then point to
one of the applications in the Not Supported folder.
The video is on screen but not playing; why?
Unfortunately, the movies do not begin playing automatically.
You must start them by clicking once on the lone arrow on the
lower left corner of the video window. The fast-forward and rewind buttons
are on the lower right corner of the video window. The bar in the middle
shows the location of the current frame within the video clip.
I Don't Hear Anything!
Is the volume turned up?
Check the Sound Control Panel under the Apple Menu.
Does your machine have enough memory?
Audio and video require lots of memory. Quit everything
but Netscape and try again.
Accessing newsgroups From WWW Browers
Browers need to know the name of the local news server. Stanford's
is nntp.stanford.edu. For Netscape, select Preferences... under
the Options menu, then choose Mail and News. Put nntp.stanford.edu
in the space for "News (NNTP) Server".
What are/Where do I find the 'Helper Applications'?
What are the 'Helper Applications'?
Most Web browsers don't have the capabilities to simultaneously surf the Web, show video clips, and playback audio. Instead, browers typically call 'Helper Applications' to do this work for them. For Netscape, you tell it which Helper Applications to use by selecting these applications via the Options menu, under Preferences/Helper Applications.
Where do I find 'Helper Applications' for the Macintosh?
You should be able to simply click on the below to download the selected application...
- For AUDIO, try...
- For STILL IMAGES try...
- For VIDEO try...
...but if that fails, try running a search for given application at the INFO-MAC HYPER ARCHIVE.
Where do I find 'Helper Applications' for IBM-compatibles?

Setting-up A Homepage On The Web
- Get "leland" Account.
The GSB does not currently have any way for its students to directly
provide Web homepages. Instead, you first need to acquire an account
on leland, a large computer that serves the entire campus.
- Accounts for Individuals.
You can get an invidual account by applying at Sweet Hall on-line.
There are instructions provided in document racks by the consultants' desk
on the second floor. Look
here for more about
leland accounts.
- Accounts for Groups.
Groups can also have their own space on the leland web server.
Send email
to afs-help@leland.stanford.edu to request a space.
- Build & Publish Your Homepage.
Internet Service Providers
If you're graduating, your email address here will be good until
the end of the summer. After that, what do you do?
Given the level of traffic lately, you're probably gonna be
pretty happy without it for awhile. Should you wish to jack
back in, check out this comprehensive list of Internet Service Providers.
