Community Service

The Stanford chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon (LFE) is Stanford's only Asian American interest fraternity. We are dedicated to serving the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. Founded in 1991, LFE is proud to have founded and performed large-scale community service projects and have its members be actively involved as leaders in the Stanford API community. LFE nationally, is the largest Asian American interest fraternity, with seven chapters in Northern California alone.

At Stanford, our members have served in leadership positions in (and in several cases founded) Asian American student organizations, including the Asian American Recycling Club, Asian American Student Association, Club Taiwan, Hapa Issues Forum, Korean American Student Association, Pilipino American Student Association, Thai Student Association, and Undergraduate Chinese American Association. We have served as ASSU Undergraduate Senators and Board of Trustees Finance Committee Undergraduate Representatives. We have been RA's, Dorm Presidents, Head AA's, AA's and RCC's. We have even had two Stanford Marching Band members.


evan.jpg (3240 bytes) LFE is strongly committed to community service, which is a natural consequence of our ethnic focus.  In 1995, our brother Evan Chen was diagnosed with leukemia. The fraternity along with Evan's friends organized a joint effort to find a bone marrow match for Evan. What resulted was the largest bone marrow typing drive in the history of the National Marrow Donor Program and AADP (Asian American Donor Program). In a matter of days, over 2000 people were typed.  A match was eventually found for Evan, unfortunately by that time the disease had taken its toll on him and he passed away in 1996.   Evan's struggles taught us much about the true meaning of brotherhood and sacrifice, and his memories live on with us today.  In his memory, every October, we host our annual AADP Bone Marrow Typing Drive.  This year, we typed roughly 600 new people in what has also become the national philanthropy of Lambda Phi Epsilon.

In addition to our contributions to AADP, members of Lambda Phi Epsilon are very active in other parts the community at Stanford.  Four of our alumni served as AASA Community Service Chair during their undergraduate years. The Fraternity has founded, organized and/or participated in countless other projects including: API (Asian Pacific Islander) Wellness Center Charity Date Auction (raising over $4,000 over the past two years), AIYME (Asian Initiative for Youth Minority Empowerment), Alternative Spring Break, Asian American Big Brother/Big Sister Program, Cherry Blossom Festival, Explore New Worlds, Guinness Book of World Record in Leapfrogging (for charity), Habitat for Humanity, OASIS"Outreach to Asian Immigrant Students 7;), Project PULL ("People United through Learning and Leadership") Academy, San Francisco Lunar New Year Parade, SAYP ("Stanford Asian Youth Project"), Special Olympics, Start-Up, UNITY 2000, and Upward Bound .
