Andrés Ovalle is a Chilean graphic artist and designer whose works have been exhibited in the Chilean Embassy in Washington, DC, and in the New York's Chilean Consulate. His art addresses themes of the memory and identity of the Americas.

As a prelude to our lecture by Venezuelan Ambassador to the United States Bernardo Alvarez, CLAS will be screening this documentary by Irish filmmakers Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain. The film chronicles the short-lived overthrow of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

ABIGAIL LEVINE, Student in the Department of Anthropological Sciences

Ms. Levine has conducted research into the pottery artifacts at Farfan province in Peru. She spoke last spring at CLAS about her research. Continued research this summer brought groundbreaking discoveries. She will provide CLAS with an update on her work.

PROFESSOR ALFONSO VALENZUELA, Visiting Scholar in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology

Dr. Valenzuela holds a Ph.D in Urbanism from UNAM. While at MIT, he is conducting research on public spaces as tools for restructuring inner city areas. .

This documentary chronicles the struggle of community leaders from Rio de Janeiro's slums to participate in the III World Social Forum in an effort to discuss social justice. The film's directors, Daniela Broitman and Fernando Salis will be on hand to discuss the making of their film.
