Mathematical and Computational Science is an interdepartmental
undergraduate program designed for students interested in applying
mathematical ideas and analysis to problems in the biological,
computational, financial or management sciences. For more information,
please see our introduction to MCS.

Announcements:

  • Fall Qtr Announcement - All students -- not just those on Biology Track -- can take Stat 166 (Computational Biology) as an elective course to satisfy MCS' WIM requirement. This course is taught Fall Qtr on T-THU from 12:50-2:05PM.

    Course Scheduling Information:

    • Checkout the 2007-08 M&CS program
    • CME 108 (Intro to Scientific Computing) replaces CS 137.
    • STAT 202 will be offered Summer qtr by David Mease.
    • STAT 203 will be offered Fall and Spring qtrs.

    Summer Research Opportunity for Undergraduates

There are several ongoing research projects for students interested in computing, statistics, and biology. The projects are interdisciplinary in nature, and focus on the statistical modeling of high-throughput biological data. Here is a sampling of possible topics:

    1. Use of regression methods to analyze the relationship between gene expression and promoter sequence.
    2. Statistical significance analysis of non-coding DNA alignments.
    3. Application of hidden markov models and smoothing techniques to the analysis of DNA copy number data.

Students should have taken Stat141, Stat191 or Stat202, and be familiar with either R or Matlab. The time frame is flexible, and is expected to last about 8 weeks, from mid-June to mid-August.
