Sanskriti > About

Our Mission

Founded in 1989, Sanskriti has expanded quickly to become one of the largest cultural groups at Stanford. With over 600 members, Sanskriti functions as a portal that connects the Stanford community to South Asian culture. By exploring history and tradition, addressing issues of sociopolitical importance, presenting a social forum for our members, and promoting our performances and lively arts to the rest of the Stanford community, Sanskriti seeks to strengthen student awareness of South Asian culture.

Culture Committee

The Cultural and South Asian Issues Committee strives to raise awareness about cultural and sociopolitical issues that are of concern to our community, both in South Asia and the diaspora. More specifically, it addresses issues pertinent to both the South Asian community and the greater Stanford community by initiating dialogue and providing forums for discussion. This committee also organizes the annual South Asian Awareness Month held during Winter Quarter. Initiated during the 2003-2004 academic school year, South Asian Awareness Month has grown in both scope and attendance over the last three years.

Special Events Committee

Apart from its practical purpose of coordinating shows, the Special Events Committee is an essential and important part of the Sanskriti team in its responsibility to showcase the South Asian performing arts culture to Stanford. The shows it coordinates are an outlet for our many talented members to share their passions with the rest of the community and also for anyone interested to learn and participate in the more colorful and rhythmical aspects of our culture.

Social Committee

We believe that the foundation of a cohesive community is one that is socially integrated. The Social Committee is responsible for organizing activities to promote bonding within our own members and with members of other communities as well. Some of our biggest social events include the Oval Meeting, which is part of our AASIB Program, our annual Bollywood party, and our Senior Send-off Grand Banquet. Ultimately, this committee serves to advance one of Sanskriti's major goals of providing a social outlet for Stanford's South Asian community.

Big Sib/Lil Sib Program
One of its primary jobs is to coordinate the Big Sib/Lil Sib program in conjunction with AASIB. This program is an opportunity for incoming freshmen to not only learn more about Sanskriti's role at Stanford, but to gain a sense of community as they get to know upperclassmen. Some of the events we have planned already for the upcoming year are the Oval Meeting, the Screw Your Sib Dance, and much more. You can sign up to be a big/little sib here .
