Stanford Friends of Tibet

Goals:

* To depolarize the Tibet issue and present a single position on the issue, which sensitively addresses and exhaustively accounts for the arguments and assertions of each “side.”

* To challenge the general atmosphere of political apathy amongst the students of this campus.

* To promote thought, discussion and a clear understanding of the Tibet issue so that all students interested in this issue will possess the tools to think critically when they hear or read something of Tibet in current events.

* To work with other student groups on campus and, beyond just networking during the last quarter of this year, brainstorm ways to lay a foundation for greater cooperation and collaboration in the future.

* To raise questions in the minds of those staunchly pro-China or pro-Tibet. Our goal is to engage in a critical discussion from both the Chinese and Tibetan perspectives and to reach a depolarized conclusion based on solid evidence and reasoning. The goal here is to challenge the preconceived notions of “truth” and “reality” and to help all to understand that the dualism of “sides” is the nothing more than the consequence of illusion.
