Laura Wilson, social class of '89, graduated from Stanford in 1991 with a degree in Human Biology (concentration in Health Psychology).   Thinking that she wanted to become a Firefighter, Laura enrolled in Fire Sciences classes after graduating from Stanford.  While studying Fire Sciences and working for the Stanford Athletic Department, Laura met a Sergeant at the Stanford Department of Public Safety who encouraged her to apply to be a deputy sheriff with SUDPS.  Although law enforcement was not her desired career path, Laura applied and was selected to be a deputy sheriff in 1992.  Laura worked her way through the ranks and was appointed to the position of Chief of Police in 2002.

In her role as Chief, Laura has several over-arching goals for the members of the department.  She is committed to ensuring that the staff who work for SUDPS earn and maintain the public's trust; provide the best service possible to the community; and are true to the principles of honesty, integrity, courage, respect and courtesy.  One of the ideals about which she is the most passionate is encouraging her staff to look at every contact as an opportunity to break down "barriers" between people, including barriers that sometimes arise between the police and the community they serve.

While at Stanford, Laura was a member of the Stanford X-County and Track teams, the X-Country Ski Team and the Cycling Team.

The Chief welcomes and encourages anyone to contact her if they have questions about law enforcement, being a woman in law enforcement or about the Department of Public Safety itself.
