DissertationRace, Class, Age, and Appearance: Matching, Exchange, and Other Properties of Dating and Marriage MarketsMy dissertation is composed of three related papers, all addressing processes of relationship formation in young adulthood. In the first of these papers I investigate patterns of exchange and matching on physical attractiveness and socioeconomic status, using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health Romantic Pair Data . This paper is currently under review. In the second section of my dissertation I use a combination of quantitative and qualitative data to address the attitudinal and social network causes of racial matching in intimate relationships among Stanford Undergraduates (Journal of Marriage and Family 72 (1): 45-72, abstract here.). In the third paper in my dissertation I use data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 to test whether occupational sex segregation influences individuals' chance of marriage.Manuscripts are available for two of these three chapters and abstracts are available for all chapters.
