The Photography of
Ralph G. Durham
Photo Statement
I've been interested in photography since high school. I started
increasing my technical skill level while in Greece, courtesy of the USAF. I exposed many
a roll of 35mm Kodachrome on scenic, people, and architectural subjects. My interest
continued on and off semi-seriously until 1990. I then decided to work on expanding my
vision and pursued work in another format, 4X5. I found, as others before me, that the
larger format forced me to be much more reflective when choosing and composing subject
matter. Cost is but one factor. The largest factors, for me, include the size of the image
when you view the ground glass. The complete manual operation. This forced me to stop and actually
plan what I wanted for a final image. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't happen with
every shutter click! I just can't explain the difference in feeling when you take the same
picture in 35mm and 4X5 and lay the results on the light table.
My images were mostly landscapes and flowers. Recently, I moved to
the San Francisco area. Because I felt that I had limited time to explore landscape
photography as much as I would have liked, I exposed myself to many other types of work.
This allowed my self to expand my thinking and vision into different types of photographic
expression. Some of the results are in my Galleries. I'm shooting much more Black &
White, exploring contrast and motion with infrared film. Not having lived in a 'real'
city, I find the interface of buildings and people very interesting. I consider myself a
struggling artist. Struggling with technique, vision, lack o'money. I'm trying to defray
my expenses with sales from exhibitions and publications. |
