Stanford TeamSpace

about the project

Student laptop ownership of nearly 100% and changes in academic programs are creating the need for public collaborative learning spaces. For example, courses in Stanford’s Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) and design courses offered by the Center for Design Research (CDR) both require extensive group collaboration and problem solving among student teams.

This need creates a unique opportunity to leverage the work of the Interactive Workspaces (“iRoom”) Project (http://iwork.stanford.edu), which has been investigating both the software and human-computer interaction challenges of computer-supported collaboration involving large shared displays. TeamSpace deploys a low-maintenance, easy-to-use subset of iRoom features in the first floor of Meyer Library, which is centrally located, is a popular study location, and hosts computing and technical support facilities. TeamSpace is available to all Stanford students on a first-come-first-served basis (for now). Users are encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences so we can continue to improve the project technology and concept. TeamSpace is a joint effort between Stanford Academic and Residential Computing and the iWork Research Group in the Computer Science Department.

In Winter 2005, the Meyer TeamSpace migrated to the TeamSpot™ software from Tidebreak (opens in separate window). TeamSpot is a commercial version of the original open-source TeamSpace software, and offers similar/better functionality and tools. Please see our Use It page to download the new client.
