2014-2015 Season Calendar



Saturday, 15 November 2014: Fall Concert, "A Voice from Heaven"

The Chorale opens its 2014-2015 season with a richly varied program of a cappella literature, ranging from the Anglican cathedral tradition to Hawaiian partsong. The concert features excerpts from Herbert Howells' haunting Requiem; the Estonian composer Urmas Sisask's mesmerizing Benedictio; and meditative works by Palestrina, Burchard, Antognini, Lili'uokalani, Miskinis, Hawley, and Gibbs.

Saturday, 14 February 2015: Haydn - Patronage and Enlightenment

The Chorale is joined by the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Stanford Chamber Strings in presenting one of Haydn's late masterworks: the Missa in Angustiis (Lord Nelson Mass).

Featured is a stellar cast of soloists:
Christine Brandes, soprano
Danielle Reutter-Harrah, mezzo-soprano
David Kurtenbach, tenor
Nik Nackley, baritone

Presented in collaboration with Stanford Live as part of the campus-wide project Haydn-Patronage and Enlightenment. The program also includes the Stanford Philharmonia Orchestra in Haydn's Symphony No 1. in D Major, and Symphony 44 in E Minor "Mourning".

Saturday, 7 March 2015: Winter Concert, "Alleluia! A Celebration of Bach"

The Chorale joins the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Ceclilia String Quartet, and students from the Stanford Chamber Strings in a celebration of the music of both Johann Sebastian Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The program features one of Bach's early masterworks, the virtuosic Easter cantata Christ lag in Todes Banden, (BWV 4), alongside the uplifting funeral motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf, (BWV 226). Also included is CPE Bach's Sinfonia in G Major, (Wq. 182 No. 1), and JS Bach's Concerto for Two Violins, (BWV 1043).





Saturday, 21 March through Sunday, 29 March 2015: Hawai'i Concert Tour
The Chorale embarks on a one-week concert and study tour of O'ahu and Hawai'i, with performances in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu, and in Kona and Waimea on Hawai'i Island. Concert details follow, and watch this space for updates!

The Chorale presents its tour program of a cappella literature, ranging from the Anglican cathedral tradition, to newly-composed works, to Hawaiian partsong, to the African American Spiritual. The concert features excerpts from Herbert Howells' haunting Requiem; the Estonian composer Urmas Sisask's mesmerizing Benedictio; and meditative works by Palestrina, Burchard, Antognini, Queen Lili'uokalani, Miskinis, Hawley, and Gibbs.

The Chorale salutes the Kona Choral Society on its 25th Anniversary! And presents its tour program of a cappella literature, ranging from the Anglican cathedral tradition, to newly-composed works, to Hawaiian partsong, to the African American Spiritual. The concert features excerpts from Herbert Howells' haunting Requiem; the Estonian composer Urmas Sisask's mesmerizing Benedictio; and meditative works by Palestrina, Burchard, Antognini, Queen Lili'uokalani, Miskinis, Hawley, and Gibbs. Plus, a special collaboration with the Kona Choral Society and its director Susan Duprey!





Sunday, 19 April 2015: Concert with the Los Angeles Children's Chorus

The Chorale makes a guest appearance with the Los Angeles Children's Chorus during their Bing Concert Hall debut. Praised for their "hauntingly beautiful" sound by the Los Angeles Times, this culturally diverse chorus is widely renowned as one of America's most refined and accomplished children's groups.





Saturday, 25 April 2015: Department of Music Admit Weekend Showcase Concert

A special program for students admitted to the class of 2019 and their families and friends, featuring the Chamber Chorale, the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk), the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, and student soloists from the Department of Music.

The Chorale closes its 2014-2015 season with a celebration of the choral tradition from the British Isles in collaboration with University Organist Robert Huw Morgan. The program features C.H.H. Parry's monumental festival anthem for double chorus and organ, Hear my words, ye people; Philip Stopford's radiant Ave Regina Coelorum; other sacred and secular works from the British Isles, and two American settings of James Agee's lyrical poem "Sure on this shining night."

The Chorale presents an informal 45-minute concert for family and friends visiting campus for Commencement.
