Antelopes
(skip directly to antelope photos)
I have learned that "antelope" is a semi-meaningless term,
perhaps more significant for what it isn't than what it is.
What antelopes are are members of the bovidae family.
What they are not are bovids that go by names such as cow, goat, sheep, buffalo, bison, etc.
Perhaps the bovids that are not antelopes are anti-antelopes, or just "lopes".
Antelopes include around 91 species in 30 genera (out of 143 species of bovids).
Similarly, it seems to include all the members of 8 out of the 10 subfamilies of Bovidae:
- Aepycerotinae,
- Alcelaphinae,
- Antilopinae,
- Cephalophinae,
- Hippotraginae,
- Pantholopinae,
- Peleinae,
- Reduncinae
as well as some members of the other two -
- Bovinae and
- Caprinae.
