This was my first kagu encounter.
The kagu is a bird that almost no one has heard about.
Or cares about.
Even at the San Diego zoo, which has two of them.
It has a very restricted range - New Caledonia.
It is considered endangered (though not critically endangered.)
It is the only member of its genus, its family, and one of only two members in its order, though even this link is questioned.
In the zoo, it is squirreled (or maybe kagued) away in an area that is almost impossible to see.
And even harder to photograph.
This was one of the main reasons I went to the zoo.
And I have to say that even though I was thrilled to see this unusual creature,
I was rather disappointed with how it was displayed.
